Why Good Development Projects Still Run Into Problems Before Launch
The project is on schedule. The gates have been passed. Launch is getting closer.
Then FAT or ramp-up reveals the issues: unstable processes, tolerance problems or critical input factors that were understood too late.
The result is familiar: additional cost, delays and late changes under pressure.
The cause is not necessarily poor project management.
A strong Product Development Process clearly defines:
What needs to be achieved, and when?
But technical development requires another question:
How confident are we that the solution is actually robust at that point?
This is where DMADV – Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify complements the existing development process.
DMADV does not replace the PDP. It provides a structured way to validate requirements, assumptions and critical factors earlier with data and evidence.
The objective:
- fewer surprises during FAT
- fewer changes during ramp-up
- more robust technical decisions
- fewer problems after launch
The PDP defines what needs to be achieved and when. DMADV helps ensure that the technical solution is actually robust when that gate is reached.
