On 7 October 2026, the GreenIoT4KMU project was presented at a statistical colloquium. The central question was straightforward: How can production, quality, energy and sustainability data be connected in a way that leads to better operational decisions?
GreenIoT4KMU is developing a digital IoT platform for SMEs in the electrical industry. The goal is to combine traditional performance indicators such as OEE with energy and sustainability KPIs and make losses not only visible, but understandable.
One focus of the presentation was Green OEE. Classical OEE combines Availability, Performance and Quality. Green OEE adds Energy Efficiency, allowing productivity, quality and energy to be evaluated within one management logic.
A key principle is: Do not start with sensors. Start with the cause.
Potential losses and influencing factors should be identified first. Only then should the team decide which data actually needs to be measured.
The path toward digital transformation can be reduced to four practical questions:
- What is happening?
- Why is it happening?
- What will happen next?
- How should the system respond?
From dashboards and root-cause analysis to prediction and assisted or rule-based reactions, the objective is to turn shopfloor data into actionable process control.
GreenIoT4KMU demonstrates how sustainability and production performance can be managed together rather than in separate reporting worlds.
